The “Diploma of Community Service” course is an outline that provides learners with core information about community services. It has included relationship building, counselling, community leadership, self-advocacy, head lease, community development strategies, community projects, implementing policy and many more necessary topics. In this community service course, learners will be able to identify and set priorities clients need & goals. This course also covers a high level of communication and the ability to develop strategies. Also, you will get the scope of practice under broad directions from senior management

The Diploma of Community Service course will prepare you for roles in casework and management. The point should be noted that the candidate must have completed at least 200 hours of work to show their competency.

Entry Requirements

Learners undertaking this qualification must demonstrate academic suitability by providing evidence of:

  • Australian Year 12 Certificate of Education; or
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) diploma; or
  • Successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework Certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English), or at a level in a framework that preceded the AQF that is equivalent to level 4 or above in the AQF; or
  • Display competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy. Skills Generation assesses a prospective students academic competence using the Australian Government approved assessment tool ‘Basic Key Skills Builder’ (BKSB)

Learners choosing the Case Management specialization should be working or have worked in Community and/or Health Services.

 

Learner Requirements

  • Access to a computer with word processing, email, Zoom/other, PDF reader capabilities and an internet connection
  • Ability to allocate appropriate study hours per week
  • Most employers/work placement hosts will expect you to hold a current First Aid Certificate, an up-to-date flu vaccination, and have police check. If working with people with a disability, you will need a Disability Worker Screening Card.
  • Your employer or vocational placement host will assist you with a Disability Worker Screening Card application if required. Please attend to these requirements as soon as possible as you will not be able to commence your mandatory work placement without them.

Packaging Rules

20 units must be completed:

  • 12 core units
  • 8 elective units, consisting of:
    • at least 6 units from amongst the electives listed in Group A, B, C, D or E below
    • up to 2 units from the electives listed below, any endorsed Training Package or accredited course.

Where appropriate, electives may be packaged to provide a qualification with a specialisation.

Packaging for each specialisation:

  • at least 4 Group A electives must be selected for the award of Diploma of Community Services(Case Management)
  • at least 3 Group B electives must be selected for award of the Diploma of Community Services (Social Housing)
  • at least 3 Group C electives must be selected for award of the Diploma of Community Services (Child, Youth and Family Welfare)
  • at least 3 Group D electives must be selected for award of the Diploma of Community Services (Responding to Family Violence).

Where two or more specialisations are completed, this should be noted on the testamur when awarding the qualification. For example, Diploma of Community Services (Case Management, Social Housing and Child, Youth and Family Welfare).

All electives chosen must contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

The Commonwealth Government requires all learners undertaking nationally recognized, accredited training courses to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).  Learners are unable to enroll without their USI.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you are currently working, or have previously worked in a relevant industry, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL applies where you have workplace experience/competency that can be formally assessed against the units of competency in this course.
